Calhoun Receives $10,000 Grant from Alabama Department of Education

Calhoun Community College has received an award of $10,000 from the Alabama Department of Education for the college’s FAFSA IN A Flash program.  The award is part of the state’s “Opening Doors College Access Challenge Grant Model Program.”  Calhoun has received funding for the program since 2009.

The  grant funds will be used to host at least two Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) workshops at Calhoun (Decatur and Huntsville campuses), host  a half-day financial aid workshop for area high school counselors,  and provide flash drives containing a FAFSA tutorial to at least 400 students. 

According to Deborah Byrd, director of Financial Aid at Calhoun, many students do not complete the FAFSA, which is the gateway for receiving financial aid for college.  “The form can be intimidating for some students and the FAFSA In A Flash program will allow students to receive assistance in completing the financial aid application,” Byrd said.

Financial aid workshops for students and parents are scheduled for Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on the Decatur Campus and Monday, April 25 and Tuesday, April 26 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on the Huntsville Campus.   For more information, contact Calhoun’s Financial Aid Office at 256.306.2500.
