Calhoun Announces Fall 2013 Staff & Faculty In-Service Program
Alabama State Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice and Alabama Community College System Chancellor Mark Heinrich, two of the state of Alabama’s top education leaders, will address the Calhoun Community College faculty, staff and administration as the college officially kicks-off the 2013-14 academic year on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, with its annual fall In-Service program. The event, to be held in the college’s Health Sciences Center on the Decatur campus, will begin at 8:15 am with a welcome and introduction of new employees, which will include new academic deans for the Humanities and Social Sciences division and the Math and Science division.
The morning session will continue with college updates, to be followed by a presentation by Vallie Collins, a passenger/survivor of US Airways Flight 1549. On January 15, 2009, the Airbus A320-214, piloted and successfully landed by Captain Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger, III, struck a flock of Canada geese during its initial climb out, lost engine power, and ditched in the Hudson River off midtown Manhattan. All 155 occupants, including Collins, safely evacuated the airliner. The incident became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson".
At 11:00 am, Bice will address the group, speaking on the topic, “A Brand New Day for Public Education in Alabama.” Appointed Alabama’s State Superintendent of Education on November 10, 2011, Bice assumed the position on January 1, 2012.
Immediately following Bice’s presentation, Heinrich will speak to the group, addressing the topic “ACCS: Our Future is Now.” As the unanimous choice of the nine-member State Board of Education for the position, Heinrich was appointed to the post in September 2012.
In addition to welcoming a number of new employees, Calhoun kicks-off the new academic year with several new programs, which include piloting the use of eBooks in selected classes and the merger of the college’s Admissions and Financial Aid offices in an effort to become more user-friendly and better meet student needs.
Students return to Calhoun on Monday, August 19th for the first official class day of the 2013 fall semester. The college will continue Fall semester registration through August 18th. For the second year, the college will conduct a special Saturday on-campus registration on August 18th. Admissions counselors and financial aid advisors will be available at both the Decatur and Huntsville campuses to assist new and returning students.
